Red Light, Green Light, Hockey!

Tactical Focus:
Maintain Possession
Purpose: To increase the ability to strike using an implement.
After assessment from previous classes, split class into groups of four according to their skill ability (H, M, L). Then further split group into partners of two.
A 20 ft. long "highway" will be set up with tape on the floor, with a "two-way street". 2 cones that are 5 ft. apart will be placed at the end of each street as the goal area.
One poly spot will be placed as the start position and the other poly spot will be placed 15 feet straight ahead. At the start poly spot, their will be 1 hockey stick and 1 yarn ball.
The partners of two will pick which side of the "two-way street" they will begin in.
One partner will be the "driver", who will begin at the start poly spot. The other partner will be the "stoplight" along the sideline.
Rules: The "driver" will have to strike the ball with the hockey stick along the "highway" from the 1st poly spot to the 2nd poly spot.
Once they reach the 2nd poly spot, the "driver" must stop. They have to strike (manipulate) the ball in between the two cones that are 5 feet apart in width.
The distance between the 2nd poly spot and the cones are 5 feet as well.
The "stoplight" moves along the sideline at the same level as the driver and has to say either "red light" or "green light" to their partner as they make their way to the 2nd poly spot.
Once their partner has made it to the 2nd poly spot, the "stoplight" moves by the cones to be ready to get the ball once it passes thru the cones.
"Red light" indicates that the "driver" must stop and become stationary but continue to strike the ball from left to right in place.
"Green light" indicates that the "driver" can move from their spot and continue to strike the ball in a forward position.
The partner as the "stoplight" cannot leave the 1st partner at a "red light" or "green light" for more than 10 seconds.
The "red light" and "green light" demands help student strike the object in a stationary and a moving position.
If the "driver" misses the goal, they get another chance by moving up 1 foot closer to the cones from the poly spot.
Once the "driver" has scored, the partners switch in positions and repeat the steps again for the new "driver".

Add obstacles to the "highway" such as, cones. Instead of a straight path, now students have a zigzag path.
Have more than 1 person go at once.
Students can walk, jog, or run as they strike the ball- all depends on skill progress and ability.

Demonstrate the proper way to hold the stick. Dominant hand (depending if right-handed or left-handed) should be placed lower than the least dominant hand on stick.
Continue to observe students and make sure they accurately strike in a sweeping motion as they reach the poly spot. Assess students.
Also observe when striking ball to goal. Continue to assess students.
Emphasize body and object control. Remind students that this activity is to improve their ability to strike and it is NOT a race.

Foam hockey sticks or wacky noodles could be used in place or regular hockey sticks because they are softer.
Depending on skill level, different balls: whiffle ball, handball, beach ball, and eventually the puck.
Make length of "highway" longer or shorter.
Increase or decrease goal area.
