Zone Attack

Tactical Focus:
Defend Space
The game settings are quite similar to the game of basketball. The purpose is to teach players positioning/use of space.
The game will start with a jump ball
The point of the game is to shoot the ball into the basketball net
Each player is given a specific area in the gym to guard while playing defense
The team on offense may move anywhere around the gym
No dribbling is permitted, only passing is allowed whether it be a chest pass or bounce pass
Every player on offense must touch the ball before a shot can be taken
Shots can be blocked by a defending opponent.
If a foul occurs or the ball goes out of play, the opposing teams regains possession of the ball anywhere on the sidelines.
While doing throw ins, the player can run anywhere up and down the side lines to make a safe pass to a team mate

Change the number of passes required before a shot can be taken
The player throwing in the ball must remain in one spot vs ability to run up and down the side lines
A shot can be taken from the sidelines
Increase or decrease the number of players on the court at a time
Add another ball into the game to increase ones awareness of the ball and the space given
If players are having trouble getting the ball into the hoop then change the point of the game to reach the opposing side.

What are effective ways for teams to cover space when on defense?
Can use either person-to-person or zone defense. Discuss the pros and cons with participants.
When the zones are small, players will learn how to play person to person as there is less space to run around.
When the space is large, players will grasp the idea of zone defence as they have a large zone to take care of not just a player to guard

Start with giving the defending players a small zone to guard. Once they have mastered the concept of space, we can enlarge the zone
Increase the height of the net when students grasp the idea of passing and throwing

Safety
Aggressive behaviour can be a safety issue. If there are any signs of aggresive behaviour, a foul occurs and the opposing team will regain possesion. Proper attire is required. ie. shoes are needed. You cannot be running around in sandals and barefoot as if the basketball hits your feet it will hurt etc.
